Abstract

Sauropus Androgynus (L.) Merr or katuk leaves are known as a traditional Indonesian medicinal plant which has various nutritional contents, such as 7% protein, 19% crude fiber, pro-vitamin A, vitamins B, C, K, and minerals about 2.8%. This research aims to identify the alkaloid content in katuk leaves using three reagents, namely Mayer, Wagner, and Dragendorff and determine the effect of consuming katuk leaves on the production of breast milk. This research uses a quantitative descriptive design and experimental methods. The sample consisted of katuk leaf simplicia and 38 breastfeeding mothers in Simpang Pulo Rambung Village, North Sumatera who had aged range about 0-24 months. The sampling technique uses total sampling. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Qualitative test results showed that katuk leaf simplicia extract positively contained alkaloids with Mayer, Wagner and Dragendorff reagents. Apart from that, there is a significant effect before and after consuming katuk leaves to increase the breast milk with a p-value <0.001. Based on the results, it can be concluded that katuk leaf extract contains alkaloids and consumption of katuk leaves affects the increasing production of breast milk.
